BAD CREDIT PRIVATE STUDENT LOAN CONSOLIDATION WORRY FREE

BAD CREDIT PRIVATE STUDENT LOAN CONSOLIDATION WORRY FREE Consolidation of private student loans is basically the method through which the student is able to manage his funds more effectively and is able to avoid the risk of default. This involves tying up the various loans into one single loop despite the differing terms and repayment schedules of the loans. This works by the lender paying off the existing loans of the student and issuing a completely new loan to him. How this helps the student is that it reduces his/her monthly repayments and extends the repayment period of the loan over a longer period of time. Also, the personal credit rating of the student improves (since the student is effectively clearing up his student loan and taking up a new one), making him eligible for other loans in the future. Approaching a Student Loan consolidation company is the best way to go about consolidating loans since such professional companies are in a better position to assess the student's financial status and come out with plans that suits the student's individual needs. to learn more about this exciting offer please visit our website at Private Fast Loans dot com. Student Financial Aid News
+ NYTimes: The consortium that had agreed to buy Sallie Mae for $25 billion plans to return to the negotiating table and seek a lower price, people close to the group said yesterday. If the group fails, it may move to scuttle the deal.
+ The buyers — the private equity firms J. C. Flowers & Company and Friedman Fleischer & Lowe, as well as two banks, JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America — met Tuesday to discuss the best way to pressure Sallie Mae into accepting a lower price, these people said.
+ While the group is hoping to renegotiate the price of Sallie Mae, these people said, it may also be willing to walk away and pay the $900 million breakup fee.
+ If that happened, the deal would become the biggest casualty of the tighter credit market, which persists despite the Federal Reserve’s decision on Tuesday to cut interest rates.
+ The buyers also appear to be reacting to legislation that Congress passed over the summer that would reduce subsidies to student lenders.
+ Though they have intimated threats before, the group intends to sit down with Sallie Mae’s parent, the SLM Corporation, as soon as President Bush signs the bill into law, these people said. That could be as early as this week.

+ IHT: The world dumped the dollar on Thursday, pushing the greenback to an all-time low of $1.40 against the euro and to parity with the Canadian dollar for the first time in three decades as currency traders around the world digested the full implications of the U.S. Federal Reserve's new course for interest rates.
+ Against the Canadian dollar, the currency of the largest U.S. trading partner, the dollar tumbled to one-to-one, a level not seen since the 1976, the early phase of a currency crisis that would eventually send shock waves through the global economy.
+ the U.S. economy now seems to be providing fresh evidence that a meltdown in real estate prices might jar consumers into spending less - a fear evidently shared by policymakers at the Fed. That has given a fresh impetus to traders bearish on the dollar.
+ Oil prices set another record on Thursday, reaching $82.55 a barrel in New York.
+ What does this all mean for you? Among other things, it means that being a tourist in other countries will be expensive for Americans
+ More exports, cheaper exports (more jobs)
+ More expensive imports
+ More tourists here
+ In terms of financial aid, it means that economic indicators are showing a slowing economy. As much as possible, try to minimize your borrowing (which sounds weird coming from a student loan company) and borrow in terms of lowest rates

FAP625: Student loan consolidation benefits go away, Mail bag, Matthew Ebel

Student Financial Aid News
+ Chronicle: The proportion of minority students among American undergraduates rose to 32 percent in 2004, from 17 percent in 1976, but minority students' academic performance still lags behind that of their white classmates, according to a report released on Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Education.
+ Minority students face persistent challenges. In 2005, for example, more than a third of foreign-born Hispanic young adults were high-school dropouts -- almost triple the rate for Hispanic young adults born in the United States, according to the report.
+ Hispanic students outrepresented black students in college enrollments in the 2003-4 academic year, but black students earned more postsecondary degrees, the report says. A larger percentage of black students received financial aid than did other groups, and black students' average award -- $10,500 -- was the highest. Hispanic students' average financial-aid award -- $9,000 -- was the lowest for all groups, says the report, which collects data from multiple sources.
+ Chronicle: A college education pays in more ways than one, according to a report released by the College Board on Wednesday. In addition to higher personal earnings for the graduates themselves, the report says, society at large benefits. College graduates are more likely to volunteer, vote, and donate blood, according to the report, and they have a higher tolerance of differing views.
+ The report, "Education Pays 2007: The Benefits of Higher Education for Individuals and Society," is the latest in an annual series from the College Board.
+ Some of the benefits college graduates derive from their education include a higher rate of employer health and pension benefits, and lower unemployment and poverty rates, as well as greater lifetime earnings. Over a 40-year period, people who have earned a bachelor's degree can expect to earn 61 percent more than those who attained only a high-school diploma, the report says.
+ We received official word from all of our loan underwriters that effective October 1, all borrower benefits are going away for federal student loan consolidation. Even for loans in process, if the loan doesn't fund before October 1, it will not receive benefits. We're notifying anyone who will be impacted.

Mail Bag
+ Robert writes in: In what year did the NSLDS get started? When did colleges start reporting loan details? I am currently experiencing a loan dispute on a perkins loan, the attorney for the college sent me a print off of a loan detail they say is from the NSLDS but it does not look like the website that I use.I thought you needed a gov issued pin number to access that information. Any info you can give would be very helpfull thank you
+ NSLDS began in 1994.
+ There are two versions of NSLDS, NSLDS for students and NSLDS for Financial Aid Professionals
+ The one for FAPs is an ugly brown and looks like something Martha Stewart might have cobbled together, color-wise, while in prison
+ NSLDS for students is white and blue.
+ Guido Stein writes in: I am sure that you get this all the time, but, I am an uncle and I would like to know what the best thing I can do for my new nephew for college savings. Where should I start his college fund?
+ Joe writes in: So if I have a $10,000 loan from the government and an investment that will guarantee me 8% return over the next 10 years, I think I would be better off investing it.
+ If I pay the loan off in full, I will have no debt/interest and no future earnings from the investment.
+ Using a future value calculations, the $10,000 invested at 8% would grow to be $22,196.40 over that 10 year period. The loan and interest payments would be a total of $13,809.66. If I invest the money today I would be up over $8,000 in 10 years - correct? This assumes I can manage the monthly payment on the student loans with my monthly income. If not, I would have to use some of the principal and interest from the investment to cover the monthly loan costs. For simplicity, let’s assume I can make the monthly payments after the investment.
+ Inflation is not a factor as much as time value of money. Another way to look at is this. If I invest and grow my $10,000 to $22,000 in 10 years and discount the value of that $10,000 to present value using 3% inflation, it exceeds the $10,000 currently owed on the loan. The present value of the investment is greater than the loan amount owed so I should invest.
+ Let me know if I am missing something.
+ That’s assuming you can find an investment that will guarantee you a yield of 8% APR over the next 10 years - and if you do, please post it here so we can all invest in it.
+ Current CD and savings yields are around 4.75% and change - ING has a 5 year CD for 5% APY, or 4.89% APR. Given that calculation, you would have a yield of $16,291, assuming monthly compounding and buying another 5 year CD in 5 years with the full proceeds plus earned interest. Accounting for CPI inflation figures for the last 10 years (which is conservative), that would be $12,729.64 in today’s dollars.
+ Using a student loan calculator, you’d pay $3,809.66 in interest. If you could save $3,809.66 in today’s dollars or earn $2,729.64 in today’s dollars, which would you rather take?
+ Jeffrey writes: I am a stock analyst that follows the for-profit education sector. I believe we have communicated with one another in the past. I know there was some fears that the new student loan bill would include a ban on opportunity pools. Did that happen in the bill signed on Friday? What would it mean exactly?

Lewis, Office of Inspector General, US Department of Education, concerning the use of opportunity pools. (A review of private student loan securitizations suggests that as much as 15% of a lender's private student loans are made without regard to traditional FICO-based underwriting criteria. Allowing a school to override a lender's rejection of one private student loan application for every ten funded private student loans is not in itself an illegal inducement. However, providing such an opportunity pool in exchange for inclusion on the preferred lender list or basing the number or dollar amount of overridden application decisions on FFELP volume, as opposed to private student loan volume, probably crosses the line.)

Student Financial Aid News
+ Chronicle: The proportion of minority students among American undergraduates rose to 32 percent in 2004, from 17 percent in 1976, but minority students’ academic performance still lags behind that of their white classmates, according to a report released on Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Education.
+ Minority students face persistent challenges. In 2005, for example, more than a third of foreign-born Hispanic young adults were high-school dropouts — almost triple the rate for Hispanic young adults born in the United States, according to the report.
+ Hispanic students outrepresented black students in college enrollments in the 2003-4 academic year, but black students earned more postsecondary degrees, the report says. A larger percentage of black students received financial aid than did other groups, and black students’ average award — $10,500 — was the highest. Hispanic students’ average financial-aid award — $9,000 — was the lowest for all groups, says the report, which collects data from multiple sources.
+ The report, “Education Pays 2007: The Benefits of Higher Education for Individuals and Society,” is the latest in an annual series from the College Board.
+ Some of the benefits college graduates derive from their education include a higher rate of employer health and pension benefits, and lower unemployment and poverty rates, as well as greater lifetime earnings. Over a 40-year period, people who have earned a bachelor’s degree can expect to earn 61 percent more than those who attained only a high-school diploma, the report says.
+ We received official word from all of our loan underwriters that effective October 1, all borrower benefits are going away for federal student loan consolidation. Even for loans in process, if the loan doesn’t fund before October 1, it will not receive benefits. We’re notifying anyone who will be impacted.

+ FinAid.org: Tying benefits, such as override or opportunity pools, to inclusion on or preferred placement within a preferred lender list. See August 1, 2003 memo from Cathy H. FAP606: Free stuff Friday, Hispanic financial aid issues, college rankings, Matthew Ebel

Student Financial Aid News
+ Chronicle: As usual, U.S. News & World Report's annual college rankings, released today, offer a heavy dose of déjà vu. Princeton topped this year's list of best colleges, just as it did last year, while Harvard remained in second and Yale again took third. And the same institutions as last year rounded out the top dozen spots. But in one possible sign that organized criticism of the rankings is having an effect, the overall response rate to the magazine's controversial reputational survey plunged to its lowest level ever.
+ Among liberal-arts colleges, the percentage of institutions that completed the U.S. News reputational survey dropped to 56 percent from 69 percent. Over all, 51 percent of the colleges and universities completed the peer-assessment survey, a drop from 58 percent last year. As recently as 2000, the rate was 68 percent.
+ Chronicle: High-achieving Hispanic students often focus on location, cost, and campus atmosphere, not prestige, in selecting their colleges, according to a report due out today.
+ "The level of pragmatism these college students had in making decisions was impressive," said Deborah A. Santiago, the report's author and vice president for policy and research at Excelencia in Education, a nonprofit policy group.
+ Hispanic-serving institutions tend to be located in areas with large Hispanic populations, are relatively inexpensive, and often have open admissions. That makes them an appealing option for Hispanic students, like those Ms. Santiago interviewed, who want to attend universities that are close to home, relatively cheap, and accessible.
+ However, students said they were not attracted by the Hispanic-serving designation, and few even knew that the distinction existed. An institution is classified as Hispanic-serving, under federal guidelines, if at least 25 percent of its students are Hispanic and 50 percent of those are from low-income families.
+ Flouting conventional wisdom, the students at Hispanic-serving universities interviewed by Ms. Santiago often did not choose the most selective institution that accepted them. Instead they were heavily influenced by the sticker price of an education.
+ "A quote that really stuck with me, and we heard it over and over, was this impression that, 'College is college, and as long as I'm motivated, I can get a good education anywhere,'" Ms. Santiago said.

FAP603: Preferred Lender Lists still in effect, Facebook parents, mail bag, Catie McKinney

Student Financial Aid News
+ New guide to our Stafford Loan e-Signature process
+ Working on a guide to our application itself
+ Kim Clark writes in: Anyway, if you're looking for good stuff for your podcase, I thought you might be interested in the story we've just posted. I called around to see if the months of headlines about preferred lender list scandals had caused colleges to put lower-cost lenders on their lists. Unfortunately, many are still omitting the cheapest lenders.
+ US News report: As college students and parents scramble to line up educational loans in the last frantic weeks before classes start, many schools are still sending out lists of "preferred lenders" that steer borrowers to unnecessarily expensive loans.
+ Four months ago, most major lenders agreed to stop making payments to either schools or financial aid officers to win placement on the influential lists. In addition, many schools have agreed to codes of conduct that are supposed to open up the lists to lenders that offer the best deals.
+ U.S. News found, however, that the lowest-cost lenders are still omitted from many colleges' lists. That means many borrowers don't realize they could save hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of dollars by borrowing from a lender not recommended by the school.
+ Many of the low-cost lenders, for example, will waive the 2.5 percent upfront origination and default fees typically charged students who borrow through the federal Stafford program. That saves students up to $237.50.
+ And many low-cost lenders are also offering to knock as much as 2.25 percentage points off the federally mandated 6.8 percent ceiling on Stafford loans.
+ Stephen Clinton, president of the Indiana Secondary Market for Education Loans, said his nonprofit is still shut out of many lists even though it offers loans with total costs lower than many of those on college lists. ISM offers student Stafford loans in which the origination fee is waived upfront, and graduates who agree to automatic electronic payments pay only 5.8 percent in interest. "It makes me crazy," Clinton says, because ISM doesn't require borrowers to jump through many hoops to get its discounts. Many other lenders advertise attractive-sounding discounts but attach so many conditions that only a tiny percentage of borrowers actually get the promised goodies, he says.
+ In addition to omitting his lender from the list, some schools discourage the students who do manage to find ISM's discounted loans, Clinton says. Federal law requires schools to accept loans from accredited lenders, but some schools "push [the ISM loan paperwork] to the back of the pile. And the student gets tired of waiting" for money needed to pay tuition bills.
+ Chronicle: At the start of the last academic year, housing and admissions officials found themselves wrestling with a new squadron of “helicopter parents” — people who use Facebook to check up on their sons’ or daughters’ future roommates, don’t like what they see, and call to complain.
+ Now that Facebook is open to everyone, those calls are coming all too frequently, USA Today reports. In many instances, parents want their children separated from roommates whose profiles show them drinking or partying. But sometimes the complaints are more troubling: According to one housing official, parents’ chief concerns are potential roommates’ race, religion, and sexual orientation.

Scholarship Update
+ The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) offers several scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study each academic year.
+ Applicants are eligible for one scholarship per school year.
+ Award amounts range from $500 to $5,000. Applications should not request a specific amount; that decision is made by a committee of volunteers and all decisions are final.
+ George H. Nofer Scholarship: One $5,000 scholarship for a graduate student who is accepted to an accredited law school or masters/doctoral program in public policy as a full-time student, but has not yet enrolled, and has a minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Recipients who have completed at least nine credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 may apply for a renewed scholarship in their second and third year of study.

FAP568: $9 BILLION up for grabs in politics, domestic violence scholarship, Rayko KRB

FAP568: $9 BILLION up for grabs in politics, domestic violence scholarship, Rayko KRB Student Financial Aid News + Inside Higher Ed: Dallas Martin, president of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, plans to retire in December, after 32 years at the group’s helm, the last dominated by intense controversy about the association’s response to the student loan scandal. In an e-mail message to the NASFAA board Friday, its chair, Linda Conard, said that Martin had “long planned to retire at the end of 2007,” and that he had told her of his plans to last year, after nearly 50 years in aid administration. + As competition for top business school graduates increases, some companies are relying on professors to do screening and to steer them promising students — for cash, according to the new issue of Business Week. Most of the time, the payments go to the business schools (frequently for the programs favored by the favored professors), but sometimes payments are made to professors directly, the magazine said. + WBZ: Tuition and financial aid are going up for students of New Hampshire's university system. The system board of trustees approved a budget on Thursday that hikes tuition an average of nearly 7 percent for in-state students and 5 percent for out-of-staters. The board also approved increasing financial aid by 11 percent. + NASFAA: "Congress is considering a plan that would require banks and other lenders to compete for the right to make federally guaranteed student loans," The Chronicle of Higher Education reports. "The proposal, which has bipartisan support, would set up government-run 'auctions' in which lenders would bid on loans based on the size of the government subsidy they would be willing to accept. Those lenders that agreed to the lowest subsidy rate would 'win,' earning the right to lend to students in a particular state, region, or subset of institutions for a set number of years." + NASFAA: "A fragile, bipartisan compromise for overhauling the nation's immigration laws was unable to survive a vote Friday morning in the U.S. Senate, a development that is likely to postpone action on the hot-button issue until after the 2008 elections," The Chronicle of Higher Education reports. "The bill's supporters fell 14 votes short of the 60 needed to limit debate and clear the way for final passage of the legislation, S 1348. The vote was 46 to 53 in favor of limiting the debate. The bill suffered a similar vote three weeks ago. After the vote, the majority leader, Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, pulled the bill from consideration. The issue, he said, 'will come back. It's only a matter of when.'" + iPhone iPhone iPhone iPhone iPhone iPhone iPhone iPhone iPhone iPhone iPhone! FAP553: Mail bag, automotive scholarship, Vassar, Rayko KRB Student Financial Aid News + It occurred to me that the travelogue is better done in photos, so back to a regular show format + From BankNet360: Consumers borrowed less in April, lowering the annualized monthly growth rate of consumer credit to 1.3%, compared with 7% in March. The monthly growth number was the lowest since October 2006’s of 0.1%. + Consumers paid off more credit card debt than they incurred, leading to a 0.5% rate of decline in that category. Auto loan borrowing grew 2.3%, down from 5.7% in March. + Total debt increased by $2.6 billion, below the $6 billion increase that had been expected, and stood at $2.85 trillion as of the end of April. + From Inside Higher Ed: Ten years ago, Vassar College began factoring financial need into some admissions decisions, a move necessitated by ballooning aid costs that similarly affected the policies at other institutions. Last week, reflecting a growing concern over the accessibility of higher education as well as more favorable economic conditions, Vassar announced that it would buck the trend and return to completely need-blind admissions for first-year freshmen. + By opening the door to admitting more students with demonstrable financial need, Vassar will have to dedicate more of its budget to financial aid — a move Hill said the college was already projecting before the policy change. She predicted that going need-blind would add about half a million dollars per class per year to the financial aid budget, which would come out of interest on the endowment. + From the Chronicle: Congress may again study the question of whether students who can't repay their college loans can win bankruptcy protection. This time the banks may put up less of a fight. The last time Congress revised the federal bankruptcy code, in 2005, it changed the law so students can't eliminate their obligations to private loans except in rare circumstances. Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the assistant leader of Democrats in the Senate, proposed legislation last week that would reverse that decision (S 1561). Scholarship Update + Global Automotive Aftermarket Scholarship + Qualified applicants must either be a graduating high school senior or have graduated from high school within the past two years (2006 or after).
